How far we have come … and how far we have left to go
Projects we have completed to improve Winifred Grocery for the Winifred community:
1. Added wi-fi to the store to give everyone access to the internet on either our public store computer or on their own portable devices. 2. Installed a cell phone booster to give Winifred its first ever cell phone reception. 3. Removed the old liquor store room, expanding the shelf space available for grocery items in the front of the store. 4. Expanded the shelf space in the back room of the store, creating a new wine and spirits sales display area. 5. Replaced the old lights with new lighting fixtures whose design dates back to the period when electricity would have first been available in Winifred. 6. Replaced the roof of the building, extending the life of the historic building. 7. Created a new front counter space with built-in candy shelves and ample space for bakery and deli displays. 8. Installed a new kitchen area to allow for freshly baked and cooked items to be sold at Winifred Grocery. 9. Removed the old sign on the front of the store, exposing the original glass blocks that were unique to the architecture of that early 1900s time period. 10. Worked with Mid-State Signs to install a new “classic look” sign on the front of the store. 11. Installed a new point of sale (POS) system in an effort to provide better information for us and thereby giving us the ability to better serve our customers in terms of pricing and service. 12. Installed bar seating facing Main Street to give everyone a place to relax for a moment and to perhaps enjoy one of Eileen’s world famous cinnamon rolls. 13. Repaired the tin ceiling, which had deteriorated due to water leakage in the past. 14. Completed all paperwork necessary to accept SNAP cards. We are now an accepted retailed for SNAP payments. 15. Installed a music system to for your shopping pleasure.
Projects we have slated for completion in the coming months:
1. Installation of a new state-of-the-art AAON heating/air conditioning system. This will allow us to have a store that is incredibly comfortable year-round. A big “Thank you!” to Norm Asbjornson for helping us with this part of our renovations. 2. Painting of the walls, floor and ceiling of the store. Kristin Carlstrom will be putting her painting talents on display as we upgrade the look of the interior of the store. 3. Decorating the store with old photos and antiques and landscape photos of the Winifred area.
If anyone has any old jars or other kinds of food containers or antiques that date back to the early days of grocery stores in Winifred, and you’d like to loan them to us, we’d love to create a display of these kinds of items on the high shelf behind the counter. Please talk to Eileen or Duane if you have some items that you’d like to discuss.
4. We have countless other small projects that will get done soon and other big projects that we’re not worrying about for now, but will hopefully get to down the road.
